Overview of Contents The editors will anthologize classic/paradigmatic articles and will write introductory essays for each section of the volume-acknowledging any well-known work that cannot be included in a reader of this length. The "classics" will be defined as those articles that have served to provide the intellectual capital for many subsequent analyses in different places with slightly differing empirical materials (eg. many studies of healing in possession cults followed the essential lines of argument of Levi-Strauss' Effectiveness of Symbols, and Victor Turner's fusion of Freud and van Gennep in his analysis of liminality in rituals of affliction, structural stress, or status change). These articles will also be included because newer work has often been defined in terms of building on the classics, or alternatively, against them--upsetting their terms of analysis. Furthermore: 1.
